Rishi Kapoor Death Anniversary: A Look Back at His Deep Bond with Kashmir
On the anniversary of legendary actor Rishi Kapoor’s death, we remember his heartfelt connection to Kashmir-a place he considered deeply personal and professionally significant. Over the years, Kapoor shot numerous films in the picturesque Valley, carrying forward a legacy that began with his father and grandfather.
In 2011, Rishi Kapoor returned to Kashmir after more than 20 years, attending a wedding hosted by director Imtiaz Ali’s brother. That visit became a nostalgic journey, as he revisited the very locations where his debut film Bobby was shot alongside Dimple Kapadia.
"I hadn’t been to Kashmir in so long,” Kapoor once shared. “On a whim, I decided to go back to every place where my father Raj Kapoor had filmed Bobby. Honestly, I usually avoid nostalgic trips-who has the time to look back? But this visit was something else.”
Rishi Kapoor retraced his steps through iconic filming spots that gave Bobby its unforgettable romantic charm. One particular memory stood out.
“I went to the location where we shot ‘Chabhi Kho Jaye’. It felt like time stood still. The same cottage, the same lush greenery, the same flowers in full bloom-even the colors hadn’t changed. It’s hard to believe the outdoor scenes for that song were filmed there nearly 39 years ago,” he recalled.
Becoming emotional, Rishi added, “I came back after 23 years. Ranbir had been to Kashmir as a baby. These moments-they seem like scenes from a movie where someone reconnects with his past. But it was all real. This is Gulmarg, this is Kashmir-the place that shaped who I am. I will forever be in love with and indebted to Kashmir. And I’m so glad Ranbir also filmed here for Rockstar.”
Rishi Kapoor also reflected on his family’s multi-generational bond with the Valley. “My grandfather, Prithviraj Kapoor, brought his theatre group to Kashmir for two months back in the 1940s. My father, Raj Kapoor, was the first filmmaker to shoot a film in Kashmir-Barsaat. He couldn’t afford a full crew, so he traveled with just the cameraman, Jal Mistry.”
He continued, “Of course, I don’t even need to mention the deep ties Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor had with Kashmir. I personally shot 15 films in the Valley, starting with my debut. Now, I’m proud that Ranbir has also continued the tradition by filming Rockstar here.”
Reflecting on the enduring legacy of Bobby, Rishi Kapoor once remarked, “Bobby was truly special, and it will stay special for future generations. But I can’t watch myself in it anymore. I was so young and so skinny-it’s almost embarrassing! When Bobby airs on satellite TV, I either change the channel or leave the room. That boy in Bobby doesn’t feel like me anymore.”
