Priyanka Chopra Jonas Responds to Criticism About Welcoming Daughter Via Surrogacy: 'I Had Medical Complications'

'Quantico' actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas speaks out on criticism of her use of a stand-in. The actress, 40, shared with British Vogue her journey to motherhood and life as a mother to daughter Malti Marie, who celebrated her first birthday earlier this week.
The birth of Malti was announced in a joint statement shared by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and husband Nick Jonas on their respective social media accounts, reports 'People' magazine. The news that their baby girl was born via surrogate was met with commentary and criticism that was hard on the new mom.
"When people talk about me, I have a hard time hiding," Priyanka Chopra Jonas told British Vogue. “But it's so painful when they talk about my daughter. I'm like, 'Leave her alone.'"
Priyanka Chopra Jonas added, "I know what it was like to hold her little hands when they were trying to find her veins," she continued, referring to the fact that Malti was born three months early. "So no, it won't be gossip. I was really protective of this chapter of my life with my daughter. Because it's not just about my life. It's hers too."
As for "People," Priyanka Chopra Jonas went on to confirm that her use of the surrogate was medically necessary.
"I had health complications," she explained. “It was a necessary step and I'm so grateful to have been in a position to do it. Our representative was so generous, kind, sweet and funny and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months.''
Priyanka Chopra Jonas commented that they were unlikely to change their minds about her, saying, “You don't know me. You don't know what I've been through. And just because I don't want to publicize my medical history or my daughter's history, the public doesn't give you the right to make up any excuses."
